I am very passionate about being a midwife. I completed my bachelor of midwifery degree in 2008 in Christchurch. Since then I have worked as a midwife providing Lead Maternity Care to three or four women a month. I have gained experience to support women to birth in a variety of different settings to include: birthing units, hospital, water births, and home birth in both city and rural areas. Before this I was a registered nurse for 30 years. I have experience in many nursing areas but in particular I specialised for 15 years in intensive care nursing.
I regard myself a life-long learner. I am a qualified dance and movement therapist. I have also trained in acupuncture and naturopathy. With my rich diversity of qualifications and colourful life experience in conjunction with being a mother myself, I have learnt many things in life which help me in my understanding of women and their families when providing midwifery care. I love babies and my heart jumps with joy helping them to get the best possible start into our world.
It is hard to describe why I have such a passion to be a midwife. However, I feel that it is a 'heartfelt calling' to support women, in particular pregnant women, to become self-knowledgeable of their inner and outer world, to remember the essence of life and thus find access to their intuitive and creative power of giving birth. My professional approach is based on the New Zealand partnership model which provides close collaboration between the pregnant woman and the midwife.
I feel very privileged to join the Maternity Matters practice in January 2012. I look forward to working with such an enthusiastic team of midwives.
