Midwifery is a “way of life” I love what I do and this provides the passion and enthusiasm for a demanding role. I am an experienced midwife and have been providing midwifery care for 17 years. I started my nursing career in 1974 but always wanted to be a midwife so I trained at the Auckland University of Technology and registered as a midwife in 1992. I have practiced at National Woman’s Hospital as a staff-midwife gaining experience in all departments. For three years I was a Domino Midwife in the hospital’s continuity of care scheme. Since August 1997 I have been practicing as an independent midwife offering both hospital and home births.
I care for up to 60 women a year providing antenatal, delivery and after birth care from pregnancy tests until 4-6 weeks after the birth. I encourage a natural approach to birth guided by the New Zealand College of Midwives philosophy of partnership with women. I support the use of alternative medicine in the birth process and offer expertise in both water and home birth. I am equally able to provide a high level of midwifery care when the birth process needs medical involvement and close monitoring with technical equipment.
I keep updated in clinical skills and ongoing education to meet the requirements for my practicing certificate. In 1999 I completed my Masters in Public Health at the University of Auckland and currently I am working toward a Doctorate in Health Sciences with the Auckland University of Technology.
My husband and I have four children born between 1978 and 1991. We lived in Dunedin until 1984 when we moved north to Auckland to further our careers and education. We have spent three years in South America working with an international organisation involved in Christian outreach and primary health care. I enjoy outdoor sports and use jogging, kayaking and biking for fitness and relaxation. I also enjoy travelling. In 2010 I have the opportunity to travel to Africa and be involved in midwifery in July/August in the Congo.

I have been a Registered Midwife for 13 years and have a background in Intensive Care Nursing and High Risk maternity Care. For the last 11 years I have worked as an Independent midwife in the Eastern suburbs of Auckland providing antenatal, labour and postnatal care for approximately 100 women a year.
I was born in Pakistan and came to New Zealand when I was 17 years old. My father is Australian and my mother Indian so I enjoy working with women from different ethnic groups and cultures. I used to be a Graphic artist and worked at Saatachi & Saatachi Advertising as well as other advertising agencies for 15 years before deciding to train as a nurse working in the Intensive Care Unit at Greenlane Hospital. I changed to Midwifery after a few years and worked as a staff midwife at National Women's High Risk Medical Clinic working with women who had Diabetes and other medical problems. I then became an Independent Midwife working in a group practice in Glen Innes before moving to Henderson and joining Maternity Matters. I have two children who are now grown up and are pursuing their own careers. I became a Midwife because I wanted to make a difference to women. I enjoy working with women and their families and want to make their birthing experiences as positive as possible. I believe midwifery is a partnership between the woman and the midwife based on trust, in which decisions are made together so that the best possible outcomes are achieved.
